Carpenter shaping wood for a custom crate in the workshop

Specialty Crating

CRATES BUILT AROUND WHAT YOU'RE SHIPPING — NEVER OFF A SHELF.

Oversized, fragile, and high-value freight, packed to survive the road. We serve Cincinnati, Dayton, Springfield, and Columbus, plus Northern Kentucky and Lexington–Louisville — and ship throughout Ohio and beyond.

Custom Crating

Custom crating, built at the speed you need

Custom crating is a wooden enclosure engineered for a single item or shipment — never pulled off a shelf. We reach for it when a product is too valuable, too fragile, or too oddly shaped to trust to a stock box.

Every crate is engineered around three variables: weight, dimensions, and fragility. We calculate load paths, bracing, and cushioning so the crate carries force around your item instead of through it.

Weight — Load-rated lumber, fasteners, and skids sized to the actual mass.

Size — Built to the item, with clearance for blocking, bracing, and forklift access.

Fragility — Foam, cushioning, and shock isolation matched to how the item fails.

On-Site Crating

When the item can’t come to us, we come to you

Some machines, sculptures, and assemblies can’t be moved before they’re crated — they’re too heavy, too delicate, or bolted in place. Our crews build and pack on-site, at your facility or the job site.

Build in place — Measure, build, and pack on location — no risky pre-move handling.

Rigging coordination — We work alongside riggers for machinery and production equipment.

Sensitive loads — Ideal for installed equipment, fine art, and lab instruments.

Engineered & Heavy-Duty

Crates for oversized and heavy equipment

When loads run into the thousands of pounds or break standard freight dimensions, we engineer heavy-duty crates with reinforced framing, steel hardware, and load-rated skids built for forklift and crane handling.

Reinforced bases — Skids and bases rated to the full load weight.

Steel hardware — Banding, bolts, and brackets for structural rigidity.

Lift-ready — Forklift pockets and lifting points designed in from the start.

International Shipping

ISPM-15 certified export crates

Wood packaging crossing borders must meet ISPM-15 — heat-treated and stamped to stop the spread of pests. We build to spec so your shipment clears customs without delays, holds, or destroyed crates.

Certified lumber — Heat-treated, stamped wood that meets international standards.

Customs-ready — Documentation and markings that keep customs moving.

Any mode — Export packing for sea, air, and intermodal freight.

Production Crating

Volume and recurring crating runs

For manufacturers shipping the same products week after week, we standardize crate designs and run them in volume — consistent quality, predictable lead times, and pricing that scales with you.

Repeatable designs — Documented crate specs for every SKU you ship.

Scheduled runs — Production tied to your shipping calendar.

Consistent quality — The same build standard across every run.

Standardized & Reusable

Reusable crates and custom pallets & skids

Not every shipment needs a one-time crate. We also build packaging designed to move again and again — or to go lighter when a full crate is more than the load requires.

Reusable Crates

Built for repeated trips with latch hardware and removable lids, reusable crates pay for themselves across a shipping loop or returnable-container program.

Custom Pallets & Skids

When a full crate is overkill, we build custom pallets and skids sized to your load — with the bracing and tie-down points freight handlers actually need.

How We Build A Crate

Engineered, not improvised

Every crate follows the same disciplined process — built from kiln-dried and heat-treated lumber, plywood and OSB panels, foam cushioning, and steel hardware.

01

Assess & measure

We capture exact dimensions, weight, fragility, and shipping mode, then choose materials and a build method to match.

02

Engineer the design

Load paths, bracing, cushioning, and skid design are engineered so force routes around the item, not through it.

03

Build & cushion

We cut load-rated lumber, assemble the frame, and add foam and blocking tuned to how the item moves and fails.

04

Pack, seal & document

The item is secured, the crate is sealed and marked, and we document the build — including ISPM-15 stamps for export.

Full-Value Protection

Insured for the full value of your freight

Standard carrier liability pays out by weight — often pennies on the dollar for high-value equipment. We offer full declared-value coverage so a loss is settled for what your shipment is actually worth.

Full declared-value coverage

Claims settled for the real value you declare — the option we recommend for fragile, oversized, and high-value loads.

Standard carrier liability

Pays out a fixed amount per pound regardless of what the item is worth — rarely enough to cover specialized freight.

Why VeloCrate

Crating that holds up — on the dock and on the books

Insured for full value

Optional full declared-value coverage means a loss is paid for what your freight is truly worth — not by the pound.

Engineered, not guessed

Load paths, bracing, and cushioning are designed for each item, so crates protect by design instead of by luck.

Local crews, regional reach

Based in the Cincinnati–Columbus corridor, we build in-shop or on-site and ship throughout Ohio and beyond.
